Did you swap the ends of the cable?
 
Was a "trusted" cable used?
Is the Student properly registered for this jack?
 
Have the Students network settings been confirmed?
Macintosh OS X:
In System Preferences, Network icon, verify the following:
"Location" is set to "Automatic"
"Show" is set to "Built-in Ethernet"
TCP/IP tab is set to "Using DHCP"
Windows XP:
Verify "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS Server address automatically" are selected under:
Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Properties > Internet Protocol TCP/IP > Properties >
 
What is the Students Ethernet Address?
(hh-hh-hh-hh-hh-hh)

Macintosh systems: This can be found in the TCP/IP Control Panel.
Windows systems: Start > Run > "cmd.exe" > "ipconfig /all"

 

On Windows machines, from a DOS prompt type:
ping 127.0.0.1
Does the machine respond?

Dormnet Registration Database:
Is the Admin Status "enabled"?
Does the trusted address list match
the ethernet address listed above?
(Or does the note indicate that the
trusted addresses isn't being used.)
 
Ethernet Port:
What is the Operational Status (Link) ?

Down

If the Operational Status is "Up" while the students computer is being tested, then it is the responsibility of the RCC to sign out a trusted laptop to test the connection.
If the Operational Status is "Down" while the students computer is being tested, then this message will be forwarded to DormNet-Ops.
